How to Choose the Best Window Film for Heat Reduction
The best heat reduction film is the one that rejects the most solar energy at the visible light level you can live with, on glass it's safe to apply to. In practice that usually means a spectrally selective ceramic film, chosen after someone looks at your actual glazing.
The number that matters is not darkness
People shop for film by shade, but shade is visible light transmission and heat is mostly infrared. Total solar energy rejected is the meaningful figure. A well-engineered light film can outperform a cheap dark one, which is the entire selling point of ceramic and spectrally selective products.
The categories, briefly
Dyed films are the cheapest and do the least; they fade and can turn purple. Metallized films reject well but are reflective and can interfere with signals. Ceramic and spectrally selective films use nano-ceramic layers to reject infrared while passing visible light — more expensive, and the reason a bright room can still be a cool one.
