Why the room behind a slider is always the worst

Six to eight feet of uninterrupted glass, usually facing a deck with no shade, means that one door delivers more solar energy into the house than several regular windows combined. That is why the couch nearest the slider is hot, the flooring in front of it is a different shade than the rest of the room, and the TV washes out every afternoon.

What film does on a patio door

A spectrally selective heat rejection film cuts a large share of solar energy while keeping the door bright and the view of the backyard intact. If glare on a screen is the complaint, we step the shade slightly darker. If privacy from a neighboring deck is the issue, a daytime privacy or frosted film handles it instead.

Tempered glass and stacked panels

Patio doors are tempered, which handles the thermal stress of film well, but the panels overlap and the frames are shallow. We film each panel individually so both still slide, and we keep the edge line consistent across the fixed and moving panel so it reads as one piece of glass from inside.
